Neil came to see Gouthwaite Hall recently, and this is what he had to say about the play and The Playhouse on his programme the following Sunday.

I went last night to a Theatre in North Yorkshire I'd never been to before: the Pateley Bridge Playhouse – what a beautiful little theatre.

I went to see a production of a play called Gouthwaite Hall which was presented by the Pateley Bridge Dramatic Society – a really interesting play this, full of North Yorkshire history.

It's a play which explores Nidderdale's connections to the Gunpowder Plot, set in the early part of the 17th Century, and focussing on two famous North Yorkshire families, the Yorkes and the Ingilbys.

A terrific production, and well done to everbody involved.

It was written by one of the performers, by Nevin Ward, and performed by the Pateley Bridge Players.

Although it was based on real events and featuring real people, it was slightly embellished, I think, - there were some fictitious elements in there, but it was a really enjoyable evening.

And especially for me because I've been to Ripley Castle, the home of the Ingilbys, and seen some of the places that were talked about in the play – it was really, really a fascinating piece of history and a very entertaining night indeed, so if you ever get the chance to go to the Pateley Bridge Playhouse, a lovely little Theatre run by a very dedicated and hard-working group of volunteers, I'd really recommend that.

Well done to everybody for that production of Gouthwaite Hall last night.

Later, Neil summed up his evening: Excellent performances and a superb script!

Neil's programme, which features Theatre news from around the region, is broadcast on Sunday nights from 7pm to 9pm.
